Historic Tax Credits

Financial incentives are available at the Federal and State level for preservation and adaptive reuse projects of eligible properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places or in a National Register Historic District.

A 20% Federal income tax credit is available for the rehabilitation of qualifying, historic, income-producing properties. All work must adhere to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.

Additionally, North Carolina allows an additional 15-25% tax credit for income-producing properties and a 15% credit for owner-occupied residential properties.

Contact Mitch Wilds in our State Historic Preservation Office for more information on tax credits.
