Designed by Milburn & Heister as a Freemasons Lodge in 1924, the building was acquired by Durham County during the Great Depression and housed the Public Health Department until it was shuttered in 1992. It was included on our Places in Peril list in 2011. The ground floor has recently been renovated for use as an event space. We will tour the new renovations as well as the un-renovated, AMAZING spaces on the second and third floors.

The 1937 Hill Building is an iconic piece of Art Deco architecture in Downtown Durham. This is your one chance to see the building before it is renovated!
Designed by Shreve, Lamb and Harmon (who also designed the Empire State Building in NYC and the RJ Reynolds Building in Winston-Salem), it has all the hallmarks of the sleek, modern style of the time. The Durham Loan & Trust Company, later Central Carolina Bank, was the primary tenant, with the department store Ellis-Stone on the ground floor. Today the building is owned by Sun Trust bank and is largely vacant. It has been acquired by 21c Museum Hotel of Louisville,

Scott Harmon’s newest project is the rehabilitation of the Five Points building in downtown. His partners in Re:Vamp Durham (the developers) and Center Studio Architecture are in the midst of construction with a scheduled opening in July. On this hard hat tour, you will see the renovation in progress and meet some of the new tenant/owners.
