Seeking Executive Director!

Preservation Durham is seeking a dynamic, outgoing, personable, and professional Executive Director.

We are a nonprofit organization with a mission to preserve and promote the historic character of Durham communities’ diverse cultural heritage by saving the places that tell the stories of our city and its people.

The successful candidate should possess fundraising experience, basic accounting knowledge, and a strong interest in historic preservation and/or architecture.

Primary Responsibilities


  • Conduct in-person solicitations to generate increased memberships and sponsorships for the organization (Individual and Corporate)
  • Organize special events for fundraising campaigns and membership drives
  • Identify prospects for donations
  • Research, write, submit, follow up, and implement grant proposals
  • Available to work occasional evenings and weekends for events as needed

Office Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the office and any office staff.
  • Prepare monthly newsletter for mass mailings to members and donors.
  • Assist Executive Committee in the development of the annual budget for Board approval.
  • Monitor budget and provide monthly reports to the Board.
  • Report relevant business matters to the President, Board and/or Committees.

Program Management

Oversee and implement programs in education, advocacy, and public engagement on preservation topics.

Other Duties

  • Attend all Board meetings.
  • Attend Committee meetings as requested or needed.

Desired Qualifications

  • College degree in related field.
  • Experience working with nonprofit organization.
  • Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office Suite and QuickBooks.

Preservation Durham offers paid time off (15 days), holiday pay and a monthly contribution toward health insurance. The starting salary is $55,000. There is some flexibility with hours for the position.
