Open Durham is a highly interlinked archive/inventory of information about people, places, and history in Durham, NC. On Open Durham, you will find historic photos, current images, personal stories, buildings we have lost, updates on renovated sites, and a wealth of detail about the Bull City.

Open Durham began in 2006 as the blog Endangered Durham, authored by Gary Kueber, which sought to highlight the number of historic structures being demolished, lost to blight, or already gone forever. Gary’s passion for Durham’s history and his frustration at a lack of care for our history gave Endangered Durham a powerful voice and gained it a large following. Gary spent hours working through archives at the Durham County Library, the Durham Herald-Sun, Duke University and working with private donors to amass the collection of photographs and stories. Ultimately, the blog outgrew its online platform, and Gary created the more flexible architecture of Open Durham, hoping that everyone would be able to upload media and tell their own stories. In 2016, Gary donated the archive to Preservation Durham. PD is honored to be the stewards of this resource and to be able to grow the archive.
