There are opportunities for people with all sorts of skills and expertise to help out with Preservation Durham throughout the year. We are always looking for people to contribute to our standing committees and for occasional help in the following positions.

If you are interested in volunteering, please email us!

  • Walking/Bike Tour Docents

Preservation Durham is currently offering three walking tours (Architecture, Tobacco, Civil Rights) and one mural bike tour of the Downtown Historic District. Tours last about 90 minutes and each category is scheduled for one Saturday per month between April and November.  Scripts and training are provided.

  • Website Assistants

We are also looking to expand the content and improve the performance of our website. We would appreciate help from writers who are interested in Durham and its history and folks who are familiar with WordPress.

  • Preservation Party Hosting/Help

Preservation Durham’s Annual Preservation Party and Fall Fundraiser has become a holiday season highlight! Join the hosting committee to help put together this fun event held in early November! Volunteers can help discover exciting donations for the silent auction, arrange entertainment, or help in many other ways.

  • Advertising

Enthusiastic people are always welcome to help sell ads for the Tour Guidebook. This is a great way to get to know local businesses and their owners.

  • Tour Guidebook Design

Writers and graphic designers are needed create our guidebook, promotional flyers, and other print materials for our events.

  • Publicity

Writers produce and distribute press releases and keep local media informed about the tour.

  • Overall Tour Logistics

One or two very well organized people coordinate all the physical details of the tour including signage, distribution of materials to houses, and collection of proceeds from sales on tour day.

  • House Captains

Outgoing and well-organized people make great house captains! A house captain is in charge of each site on the tour and is our liaison with the homeowner, enlists and trains docents, and manages the site during the tour.
