Volunteer
There are opportunities for people with all sorts of skills and expertise to help out with Preservation Durham throughout the year. We are always looking for people to contribute to our standing committees and for occasional help in the following positions.

- Walking/Bike Tour Docents
Preservation Durham is currently offering three walking tours (Architecture, Tobacco, Civil Rights) and one mural bike tour of the Downtown Historic District. Tours last about 90 minutes and each category is scheduled for one Saturday per month between April and November. Scripts and training are provided.
- Website Assistants
We are also looking to expand the content and improve the performance of our website. We would appreciate help from writers who are interested in Durham and its history and folks who are familiar with WordPress.
- Preservation Party Hosting/Help
Preservation Durham’s Annual Preservation Party and Fall Fundraiser has become a holiday season highlight! Join the hosting committee to help put together this fun event held in early November! Volunteers can help discover exciting donations for the silent auction, arrange entertainment, or help in many other ways.
The Old Durham Home Tour
Our annual Home Tour takes place the last weekend in April each year. Preservation Durham needs an army of volunteers to make the tour a success! Some of the many jobs that must be done to put on a successful tour are listed below.
- Home Tour Guide/Docent
Docents guide visitors at each tour site, explaining the history of the site and providing general information about the tour. They work two-hour shifts and are trained by the House Captain. Docents are thanked with a free ticket to the Tour!
- Sponsor Outreach
We need outgoing and friendly people get our sponsors involved.
- Advertising
Enthusiastic people are always welcome to help sell ads for the Tour Guidebook. This is a great way to get to know local businesses and their owners.
- Tour Guidebook Design
Writers and graphic designers are needed create our guidebook, promotional flyers, and other print materials for our events.
- Publicity
Writers produce and distribute press releases and keep local media informed about the tour.
- Overall Tour Logistics
One or two very well organized people coordinate all the physical details of the tour including signage, distribution of materials to houses, and collection of proceeds from sales on tour day.
- House Captains
Outgoing and well-organized people make great house captains! A house captain is in charge of each site on the tour and is our liaison with the homeowner, enlists and trains docents, and manages the site during the tour.
