Department of Social Services Building

Issue Background and Overview:
In 2013, Durham County proposed a plan which called for tearing down this 1966 building, and turning the empty lot into a park. PD opposes this plan, because there is no reason to tear down a usable building and turn it an empty lot, which removes any possibility of it producing any property taxes. Additionally, the lot, which sits directly next to a highway exit ramp, is not a good location for a park. Downtown Durham has a density problem, and does not need more empty lots.
