The Hill Building

The 1937 Hill Building is an iconic piece of Art Deco architecture in Downtown Durham. This is your one chance to see the building before it is renovated!
Designed by Shreve, Lamb and Harmon (who also designed the Empire State Building in NYC and the RJ Reynolds Building in Winston-Salem), it has all the hallmarks of the sleek, modern style of the time. The Durham Loan & Trust Company, later Central Carolina Bank, was the primary tenant, with the department store Ellis-Stone on the ground floor. More info about the building is available on Open Durham.
Today the building is owned by Sun Trust bank and is largely vacant. It has been acquired by 21c Museum Hotel of Louisville,
