The National Register of Historic Places, a division of the National Park Service, is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect our historic and archeological resources. Properties listed include districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects that are significant in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, and culture.
Owners of individually listed properties or properties within National Register Districts are eligible for tax credits to help them preserve their historic homes, businesses, and institutions.
The most recent National Register Historic District in Durham is a 50-square-block area of East Durham added in December, 2004.
Nationwide, nearly 73,000 sites are listed on the National Register; 58 of them are in Durham County.
