Durham Sites on Civil War Trail

Several sites in Durham are to be included on a new Civil War Trail being planned to guide tourists through central North Carolina. "Carolina Campaign: End of the War" follows Union General Sherman's march and ends at Durham's Bennett Place State Historic Site.

Other Durham sites on the tour include the location of Union headquarters (present-day Downtown Durham); the Union cavalry camp at West Point (near West Point on the Eno City Park); the New Hope Creek area in southwest Durham, where Union Commander Kilpatrick's cavalry and retreating Confederate soldiers waged the last picket battle of the war; and the sites of two important railroad depots used in final troop movements of the war: Durham's Station (Downtown near the Old Bull Building) and Brassfield Station (near the Durham Fire Department Station #13 on S. Miami Blvd).

Sites will soon be marked with special signs describing their historical significance and specific role in the Civil War.

The tour is being organized by the NC Division of Tourism, Film, and Sports Development and the NC Dept. of Transportation with the help of the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau. Local historian Jim Wise is also working on the research. Each site on the trail must be clearly and accurately interpreted as historically significant during the war, have readily available public parking, and be well maintained.
