Issue Background and Overview:
The Beltline is an abandoned Norfolk-Southern railroad spur that stretches from downtown to Old North and beyond. The city would like to convert the empty tracks to a walking trail. It has been in negotiations with Norfolk-Southern to buy the tracks, but thus far, has been unable to raise the $7.1 million asking price. Preservation Durham supports the conversion of the rails into trails, and we’ve been a partner in negotiations with N-S to ask them to lower their asking price.
